  • Company Recycling Initiatives

Through innovative waste prevention, recycling and reuse methods, we are proactive in minimizing waste. For over 10 years, we have voluntarily reported our waste management activities through participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program. We also partner with state and local governments, suppliers and waste vendors who share our strong level of commitment to pollution prevention and consistently provide us with new waste management alternatives. These partnerships have helped us reduce the amount of waste we generate and send to landfills each year.

In 2013, we reduced, recycled or reused just over 88,000 tons of waste materials.

Here are some of our success stories:

    • Reduce: Every year, we purchase a significant volume of electrical wire/cable to build and maintain our power delivery system. Historically, wire/cable was received on wood and metal reels, which would eventually be scrapped or disposed of in a landfill. Our purchasing department has worked with several of our vendors to obtain electrical wire/cable without reels to eliminate the need for reel disposal.
    • Re-use: We have been installing smart meters that can provide customers detailed information on their accounts that they can use to manage their energy consumption more effectively. Because we were able to identify a company that could reuse our customers' existing meters, we have successfully diverted almost 900 tons of waste from landfills since the inception of the smart meter program in 2010.
    • Recycle: Thousands of pieces of electrical equipment are removed from service annually. Each piece of equipment is made up of a variety of metals, and most also contain dielectric fluid (mineral oil). We recycle the metal and dielectric fluid.
