Energy Services entered into a partnership with Spartanburg County (S.C.) School
District Three in 2013 to install more than $5.5 million in energy efficiency
improvements at nine school facilities. These are guaranteed to save the school
district more than $185,000 annually and $3.5 million over the contract term,
while they also will address critical infrastructure needs.
contract includes installing building automation systems, retrofitting interior
lighting and LED exterior lighting and implementing water conservation
measures. In addition, Pepco Energy Services will upgrade the 35-year-old HVAC
and plumbing systems. Palmetto Clean Energy provided a grant that enables the
contract to also include installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system.
project is expected to reduce the school district’s energy usage by 25 percent
below the levels in the year 2000. It will enable the school district to exceed
requirements of South Carolina legislation, which set a goal of reducing all
state agency and public school district energy usage by 20 percent in 2020, compared
with the levels in 2000.
this project is expected to reduce the school district’s carbon footprint
through annual savings of 1.7 million kWh and 2.25 million gallons of water.
This will decrease carbon-dioxide production by 1.1 million pounds per year, or
equivalent to carbon reduction capability of 415 acres of trees.
Construction began in late 2013 and is
scheduled to be completed by late 2014.
