Pepco Holdings Partners with DOE in Expanding US Electric Car Charging Infrastructure

WASHINGTON D.C. – Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI) has signed a pledge to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to implement the Workplace Charging Challenge. The Workplace Charging Challenge calls upon America’s employers to act as Partners and make a bold commitment to provide plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging access to their workforce. The goal is to increase the number of American employers offering workplace charging by tenfold in the next five years.

By signing the pledge, PHI has committed a Senior Executive as Sponsor, to embark on a project that evaluates PEV charging demand at the workplace and based on such assessment to develop a plan within six months to meet those needs at least at one major worksite. In addition PHI will contribute to DOE the applicable progress information.

“PHI is committed to the growth of plug-in electric vehicles and charging stations in America’s workplaces,” said William M. Gausman sr. vice president, strategic initiatives for PHI. “ Environmental stewardship is one of PHI's central values and it guides our approach to business operations, regulatory compliance and resource conservation.

Vehicle Charging Infrastructures provided by employers encourage employees to consider plug-in vehicles for their transportation needs, enhances ongoing corporate sustainability efforts and demonstrates corporate leadership in adopting advanced technology as in the case of PHI. The ability to charge at work can potentially double the all-electric daily commuting distance for a PEV driver.

In support of those who join the Challenge, DOE will provide resources and establish an information-sharing forum. Successes made by Challenge participants will be recognized through the identification of best practices.
