Premier Rating Agency Places PHI in Top Tier
WASHINGTON - Pepco Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: POM) has been named once again to the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index. The index places Pepco Holdings (PHI) in the top tier of S&P 500 companies – and among the top five utilities – for carbon performance. The rankings were announced Sept. 20 in New York by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
“We consider this recognition by the CDP to be an endorsement of PHI’s long commitment to maintaining and improving the environment in and around our operations,” said Joseph M. Rigby, PHI’s Chairman, President and CEO. “The CDP’s worldwide scope also demonstrates a new reality: that the impact of our efforts will ultimately be global.”
A key component of CDP’s annual S&P 500 Report, the index highlights S&P 500 companies that have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance with respect to climate change disclosure. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure practices with high scores indicating good internal data management and understanding of climate change-related issues affecting the company.
“Companies that make this index…have demonstrated clear consideration of how climate change will impact their business,” said Paul Dickinson, Chief Executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project. “As companies’ understanding of climate change issues grows, they are better placed to take positive action to manage and mitigate its risks.”
The CDP, which represents 534 institutional investors with $64 trillion in assets under management, conducts a rigorous annual survey of companies worldwide that participate voluntarily, providing detailed information about their environmental standards and performance. Participating companies report data on their historic levels of greenhouse gas emissions; development and implementation of monitoring and reduction protocols; and historic and recent performance against self-developed reduction goals.
PHI publishes Powering a Sustainable Future, the company’s annual environmental sustainability report. In addition to its high ranking in the CDP, PHI receives widespread recognition annually for its environmental stewardship and is the leader in corporate partnership with the Chesapeake Fund, dedicated to restoring water quality in the Chesapeake Bay through nitrogen reduction.
