Methane is recognized as a potent greenhouse gas with a
global warming potential of over 20 times greater than carbon dioxide. Methane
can leak from natural gas distribution mains and services resulting in
emissions to the atmosphere.
Delmarva Power achieved fugitive methane emission
reductions in 2013 by replacing older natural gas distribution mains and
services. In total, we replaced 9 miles of distribution pipe and more than
3,000 service pipes. Although leak surveys were not required in 2013, surveys performed
in previous years have enabled us to reduce methane emissions and better serve
our natural gas customers.
