• Benning Service Center Consent Decree

  • In January 2011, Pepco and the District of Columbia Department of the Environment (DDOE) signed a consent decree that detailed Pepco's agreement to evaluate environmental conditions at the Benning Road facility and adjacent areas of the Anacostia River. The assessment of environmental conditions is being conducted in two phases:

    • Remedial investigation: to determine whether or not Pepco's historical operations at the Benning Road property have contributed to pollution of the sediments of the adjacent portions of the Anacostia River, and whether or not current conditions at the property present any continuing threat to water quality in the river; and

    • Feasibility study: to identify and evaluate potential cleanup actions. DDOE will use the results of the assessment to determine, along with input from the public, what, if any, cleanup actions should be undertaken at the Benning Road facility or adjacent areas of the river.

The field work related to the remedial Investigation began in the first quarter of 2013. Additional information can be found at www.benningservicecenter.com.
